All of these, excepting Enoch, had the time and could have had the motive. It is reasonable to assume that Enoch would have readily admitted any one of them to the house. They were all, in some degree, parties in interest to the exhibition. Undoubtedly they were all around enough previously to have learned how to turn off the alarms.

John Doe:

If there is a John Doe, it might take forever to find him. But, since the local newspaper carried a full story on the value of the exhibit, there might be a John Doe and he might be any one of the seven or eight thousand people in Athens. McA. says there are no real criminals in town, but a petty criminal might have seen this as his chance to graduate; or this might be the one crime of an otherwise honest person. How gain entrance? John Doe could be someone who was known to Enoch and was let in on the basis of that. John Doe might have been someone Enoch didn’t know, but who offered a good-enough story so that Enoch let him in. Probably wouldn’t have been hard. John Doe might also be Jane Doe—a woman that Enoch was mixed up with. If one of these is the answer, this case could drag on forever. Our best chance is if Fred Swanson is blackmailing the murderer and will lead us to him or her.
